Title: CEO and Founder
Company/organization: PulManage, Inc
How do you think your work has benefited South Carolina? I am confident that my work has significantly contributed to the success of researchers and clinicians who work with people affected by chronic lung diseases. Firstly, I have supported clinicians by providing training and guidance in effectively conducting diagnostic testing, specifically spirometry, to confirm the presence of airflow-limiting diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Secondly, the software platform developed by my team has been designed to prioritize user (patient) and researcher engagement, providing a meaningful experience for both parties.
What is South Carolina’s biggest strength? South Carolina is a rare gem in the respiratory industry. We are home to some of the most successful pharmaceutical manufacturers and life sciences companies that specialize in respiratory therapeutics. I believe that the collaborative efforts from organizations like SCBio, SCRA, the Commerce Department, and others to intentionally focus on expanding the life science industry in the state are already yielding positive results With over 1,000 companies in this sector, our home state is actively working to foster its growth and the health of South Carolinians.
Its biggest challenge? Well, that is a loaded question. As a founder, I believe the biggest challenge for the state and any start-up to continue forward traction is securing access to capital for companies like mine and others in the space.
What is something most people would be surprised to know about you? Like many founders, I have a personal connection to the problem I’m working to solve. I often start my presentations by sharing with the audience that I have a deep family with a history of chronic lung disease. I have firsthand experience with the current healthcare models, both in my professional life and through my loved ones’ experiences. This is the driving force behind my work, and it keeps me motivated, especially on challenging days. I firmly believe that success is not solely based on having the best ‘idea,’ but rather on knowing your true north, persevering through adversity, and staying committed to the mission you are called to.
