Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research is using a $2 million national economic development grant to support building a new structure in its first new technology neighborhood in 15 years.

The first building on the site, a multi-tenant 40,000-square-foot high-bay facility, features flexible laboratory and office space adaptable for a variety of sectors including engineering and technical services or small-scale distribution. According to a news release, the structure has been designed to fill a void in the real estate market for multi-purpose facilities used to accommodate both startups and legacy enterprises in the automotive, transportation, manufacturing and engineering support service industries.

“From OEMs to suppliers in automotive, aerospace and beyond, our global reputation is directly tied to our ability to support Clemson’s partners and advance economic development in South Carolina,” Jack Ellenberg, associate vice president of corporate partnerships and strategic initiatives, said in the release.

The new development follows the completion of CU-ICAR’s last new technology neighborhood in 2016 on the 250-acre campus, according to the release. Clemson was awarded the $2 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
