An inaugural expo geared toward developing the maritime workforce is set for later this month in Charleston.

The first Maritime & Logistics Youth Expo will take place April 25 in partnership with The Maritime Association of South Carolina, SC Ports, SC Competes (SC Logistics Initiative), Charleston County School District & The Maritime Cybersecurity Institute.

“Our goal is that students will learn about maritime and logistics careers for post high school opportunities emphasizing that with any level of education there is a chance for a great career path right in their backyard,” said Taylor Jackson, president and CEO of The Maritime Association, in the release. “We are confident that this expo will lead to the next generation of talent in our workforce for South Carolina and help make a pipeline for these high wage, high demand jobs.”

The event, which will highlight opportunities for 8th-12th graders, will take place at 196 Concord St.

“The maritime industry in Charleston is vital to our state’s economy and provides countless job opportunities,” said SC Ports President and CEO Barbara Melvin. “Exposing students to careers in their own backyard can open doors they never knew existed, and it helps to ensure that the maritime industry continues to recruit new generations of talent.”

The expo will feature over 30 companies with table displays, including trucks, chassis, simulations and trailers with hands-on activities, according to a news release. Students will have the chance to learn about the career opportunities in both maritime and logistics sectors.
